Discover the Power of Weak Ties After 50 - Career Pivot Weak Ties Than Rejuvenate You are probably wondering, “What the heck are a weak ties and how can they help me rejuvenate my career?” Most of us who are in the 2nd half of lifehave had a hiccup or two within our careers sometime during the last 15 years. That includes me. I claim that, for those of us who are in the 2nd half of life, our next job will come via relationship or referral from someone in our extended network. Believe it or not, the best referrals come from people we do not know very well. Let me explain how weak ties can help to rejuvenate your career. Weak Ties Defined When people think about who might help them in a job search, they tend to make a very short list, along the lines of people you might ask to help you move: very close friends, people who owe you a favor. That’s actually a big mistake. In 1973, Johns Hopkins sociologist, Mark Granovetter wrote a paper called, “The Strength of Weak Ties,” which came to much of the world’s attention when it was referenced in Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point. The idea was that most of us have a network of people with whom we are weakly tiedâ€"we know each other, we are familiar with each other’s reputations, but we are not close. Granovetter’s point was that we might actually be more influenced by people with whom we have weak ties than by those with whom we have strong ties. If your best friend buys a pair of bright orange shoes, for example, you might think it’s crazy. But if you suddenly start seeing several people wearing bright orange shoes, your perspective might shift and you start to think “This is a trend. I should get some bright orange shoes.” Granovetter was talking about the distribution of ideas but the same thing works with behavior. If your partner tells you your sense of humor is inappropriate, for example, you might just think “Oh, they’re picking on me again.” But if someone you only know distantly through business tells you the same thing, you’ll probably give the question a lot more weight. When we communicate with those with whom we have strong ties, we use a kind of shorthand. Our communication with those we know well is much more explicit. Our acquaintances are far less likely to know one another. In terms of connection with general society and staying in touch with what is going on in the wider world, the weak ties with our acquaintances are paradoxically much more important than the inwardly-focused conversations with our closer friends. Indeed, the information we discuss with our friends often comes from wider sources. Listen to the most recent episode In the familiarity of strong ties, we use simple restricted codes, where much is implicit and taken for granted. In communicating through the weak ties, we need more explicit elaborated codes for meaning to be fully communicated. When elaborating, we have more scope for creativity and the thought that it stimulates makes innovation more likely. The more weak ties we have, the more connected to the world we are and are more likely to receive important information about ideas, threats, and opportunities in time to respond to them. Your adult children can be valuable connectors to both their friends and their friends’ parents. Your adult children will develop relationships in a very different way than you. Any close familial relationship can help you through their network, i.e. friends. It is only to be understood.” â€" Marie Curie Early last evening, a turbulent cycle of thunderstorms and residual tornadoes swept through my state of Minnesota. A tornado touched down within 15 miles of our home, and our beautiful lake haven turned into a scary scenario with strong winds and torrential rains, followed by an eerie pea-green sky and a continuous thunderous noise. It was quite scary, and my husband, English Cocker and I headed to the lower level to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. When all was over (no damage), the weather turned beautiful, with a lovely rainbow followed by a red sky at nightâ€"sailor’s delight, as the saying goes. Fear can make us lose sight of the fact that any sort of stormâ€"weather or life relatedâ€"always passes at some point. We should prepare for the worst and concentrate on the bestâ€"that rainbow around the corner. For the job seeker, the storm is facing the work of finding a job, rejection and the unknown; the rainbow is opportunities. The rainbow is opportunities For the job seekerâ€"particularly one who has been unemployed for several months or moreâ€"the summer can be particularly stressful. I’ve been working with many clients who’ve lost their jobs, and who are worried about finances and their job outlook. One of the biggest roadblocks for them is their fear that the summer is a bad time to search. They have the perception that no one hires in the summer; that with new grads out hunting combined with qualified out-of-work candidates, the prospects are bleak. This is not true! I love the old acronym for fear: False Expectations Appearing Real! Perception of whether the search is a storm of “yes buts” or a rainbow of “yes I cans” will make all the difference. Here are 10 ways to move through your fear of job seeking in the summer months: Determine that you are going to have a fearless mindset as your first step in finding career opportunities (contacts, companies, openings). If you are feeling afraid, resolve to be a confident campaigner to land a new job this summer. Take personal responsibility for your future. Decide that you are going to concentrate on your strengths and value proposition; and finding that fit. Invest 95% of your time and resources on the solution, not the fear. Commit to finding a meaningful goal, and then creating strategies and action plans to reach it. Put this on paper or screen and refer to it regularly. Track your actions. Stay fit. Eat well and exercise regularly to give yourself energy and a clear mind. Research the market. Then write down the top ten jobs and industries that currently provide the best opportunities.
